A Culture of Cruelty: Abuse and Impunity in Short-Term U.S. Border Patrol Custody

With Katerina Sinclair, Ph.D. M.A.S.*

In the past three years, volunteers with No More Deaths/No Mas Muertes interviewed almost 13,000 people who had been held in short-term Border Patrol custody and published their findings in a recent report entitled A Culture of Cruelty. Detainees reported more than 30,000 incidents of human rights violations by Border Patrol agents ranging from denial of water to separation of family members to deliberate torture. In this discussion, Dr. Sinclair will detail the findings of the report, the political context in which these abuses continue to occur, and how University and Tucson community members can defend human rights on the border.
